Behind the Himalaya in monsoon

We trekked in June, when the rest of Nepal sits under cloud, and Mustang's rain shadow gave us two dry weeks of wind-carved canyons and cave monasteries. Lo Manthang is extraordinary — a walled city where the day still runs to monastery time. Our guide translated conversations with horsemen and monastery keepers we could never have had alone. It is more expedition than trek: long dusty days, simple lodges, and a landscape like nowhere else in the country. Exactly why we went.

A valley that stays with you

Langtang was my third trek in Nepal and the one I think about most. The trail climbs through forest loud with birdsong into a high valley walled by ice, and in April the rhododendrons were absurd. Our guide grew up nearby and carried the valley's story — including the 2015 earthquake — with real care. The dawn walk above Kyanjin Gompa, tea at the top, cheese from the Kyanjin dairy afterwards: quiet, unhurried days, done properly.

A ridge above the clouds

Mardi Himal packs a lot into five days: rhododendron forest in full April bloom, then a narrowing ridge where Machapuchare fills the sky ahead of you. Sunrise above High Camp, with a cloud sea flooding the valleys below, justified every early start. The guide's pacing and teahouse choices were spot on. Four stars only because spring is popular and High Camp's lodges are basic and full — go expecting a bunkhouse atmosphere and you will love all of it.

Villages first, mountains always

This trail is about people as much as peaks. We slept in Tamang villages where our guide seemed to know every kitchen, ate dal bhat cooked over wood stoves, and soaked at Tatopani while the Langtang range went pink at dusk. March gave us clear mornings, blossom in the lower fields and trails we mostly had to ourselves. It is a gentle, generous route — my knees were grateful — and by the end the farewells took longer than the walking.

The right first trek

This was my first time trekking anywhere and it was pitched perfectly. Four days, comfortable lodges, and a guide who never let the stone staircases above Ulleri feel like a test. Poon Hill itself delivered: we climbed by headtorch with flasks of tea and watched dawn reach Dhaulagiri and Annapurna South one summit at a time. February meant crisp air, snow dusting the forest and hardly another group on the hill. I have already started planning the next one.

Earn the trail, fly the return

I had exactly two weeks of leave and this itinerary used them perfectly. We earned Base Camp on foot — the full trail, acclimatization days included — then skipped the three-day walk out with the helicopter from Gorak Shep. Watching the route we had climbed for ten days unspool beneath us in forty minutes was the best debrief imaginable. December was cold but brilliantly clear and the trail nearly empty. The guide's daily health checks made a winter trek feel completely controlled.

Patience, then Kala Patthar

I was nervous about the altitude, but the pace never let it become a problem. Two acclimatization days — one above Namche, one at Dingboche — and the guide checking our oxygen every evening made the height feel earned rather than risked. Base Camp was the goal, but sunrise from Kala Patthar was the moment: Everest going gold while we stood in the cold in complete silence. November meant freezing nights and empty trails; the teahouse stoves and endless dal bhat made up for both.

Wilder than the classics

If you want the Nepal of twenty years ago, this is it. The Budhi Gandaki gorge is days of suspension bridges and stacked switchbacks, then the world opens out at Samagaun under Manaslu's double summit. The crew handled the restricted-area permits and checkpoints without us thinking about them once, and the acclimatization day paid for itself on the Larkya La — long, cold and completely worth it when the far side appeared. Teahouses are plainer than Everest's; the welcome is warmer.

The pass at first light

Crossing the Thorong La is the hardest and best thing I have done on a trail. We left under headtorches and the trek leader set a slow, even rhythm that put all eight of us at the prayer flags on 5,416 m just after sunrise. The build-up mattered as much: the acclimatization day in Manang, bakery stops, apple orchards lower down. Teahouses were simple and warm, and every lodge was arranged before we walked in.

Nothing prepares you for the Sanctuary. You climb through bamboo and rhododendron for days, the gorge tightens, and then the trail opens into a ring of ice with Annapurna I rising four kilometers above the moraine. We reached Base Camp for sunrise — silent except for avalanches rumbling somewhere across the glacier. Our guide managed the Chhomrong staircases and the teahouse bookings so smoothly the trek felt effortless. The hot springs at Jhinu Danda on the way out are not optional.

Three passes, no shortcuts

The Three Passes is a serious undertaking and the operation matched it. The itinerary builds altitude so patiently that by the Kongma La we felt made for it; the Cho La's small glacier and the last light on the Renjo La — Everest lit up across the valley — were the finest mountain moments I have had anywhere. Our guide read the weather and the group's energy every morning and adjusted without drama. Strenuous, honest, superbly run.

The quieter side of the Khumbu

We chose Gokyo over Base Camp for the lakes and never regretted it. From Gokyo Ri we watched first light reach four 8,000-meter peaks while the third lake turned from black to turquoise below us. The guide's evening briefings and oxygen checks were reassuringly routine. One honest note: October teahouses at Machhermo and Gokyo are busy, so expect shared rooms and a queue for the shower. Book autumn early and bring a proper sleeping bag — the nights are seriously cold.
