What to expect
Base camps are where trails end and mountains begin — moraine fields and expedition tents set beneath faces a vertical mile high. Walking to one gives a trek the thing many routes lack: a destination with a name, a fixed point that pulls you up the valley one teahouse at a time.
Everest Base Camp is the most famous, but it is not alone. The Annapurna Sanctuary sets you in a glacial amphitheatre ringed by ten peaks, and quieter base camps wait in the Manaslu and Makalu valleys. Every route climbs through inhabited country first, so the arrival means more for everything walked before it.
