High passes
Crossings above 5,000 m that link one valley to the next
The style
What to expect
A high pass is the Himalaya distilled: a pre-dawn start, a slow climb through moraine and old snow, prayer flags snapping on the crest, and an entirely new valley opening at your feet. Crossings like the Thorong La, the Larkya La and the Khumbu's three passes all top 5,000 m, and each one turns a walk into a journey with a hinge in the middle.
These are committing days, and we plan them that way — extra acclimatization nights below the crossing, a weather margin built into the itinerary, and guides empowered to wait a day rather than push a tired group over the top. Fitness gets you up; patience gets you across.
