Bhutan does things deliberately. The kingdom measures itself by Gross National Happiness, keeps tourism to a considered pace, and holds more than two-thirds of its land under forest — so its valleys feel tended rather than developed, watched over by the fortress-monasteries called dzongs. The set piece is Paro Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest, a monastery pinned to a cliff nine hundred metres above the valley floor.
Most journeys blend culture and walking. The Druk Path trek crosses the ridgeline between Paro and Thimphu past a chain of dark alpine lakes, while cultural circuits link Paro's dzong and museums with Thimphu's craft workshops and the riverside Punakha Dzong, for many the most beautiful building in the Himalaya.
