Tibet is the roof the Himalaya leans against: a plateau of ochre hills and turquoise lakes where the light is hard, the air is thin from the first morning, and monastery cities carry a thousand years of Buddhist scholarship. In Lhasa you climb the Potala's whitewashed staircases, join pilgrims circling the Jokhang on the Barkhor, and hear the debating courtyards of Sera monastery in full voice.
Beyond Lhasa the classic overland route runs southwest through Gyantse and Shigatse to Rongbuk monastery and the north base camp of Everest, the mountain rising as a single dark pyramid at the head of the valley. This is travel by road rather than on foot — high passes strung with prayer flags, barley villages, and long views that reset your sense of scale.
