Walking in Annapurna

The Annapurna region offers the widest range of trekking in Nepal, all within reach of the lakeside city of Pokhara. In a few days' walk the country changes completely — from terraced rice fields and rhododendron forest to the arid, Tibetan-influenced valleys north of the main range. The classic Annapurna Circuit crosses the 5,416 m Thorong La; the Sanctuary trek leads into a glacial bowl ringed by peaks; and short walks like Poon Hill deliver sunrise panoramas in three days.

Trails are well served by comfortable lodges, the cultural mix of Gurung, Magar and Thakali villages is rich, and the region suits everyone from first-time trekkers to seasoned walkers chasing high passes. It is the easiest region to combine a serious mountain trek with rest days by a lake.
