Forested valley running toward glaciated peaks

Langtang

The valley nearest Kathmandu — forest, yak pasture and Tamang villages

The region

Walking in Langtang

Langtang is the closest trekking region to Kathmandu — close enough that a week is enough for a real Himalayan valley. The trail follows the Langtang Khola through oak and rhododendron forest into open yak pasture below the glaciers of Langtang Lirung, passing Tamang villages and the cheese-making settlement of Kyanjin Gompa. It is gentler than the big passes, well suited to a first trek or a short escape.

The 2015 earthquake hit Langtang hard, and trekking here directly supports a community that has rebuilt its lodges and trails with remarkable resolve. Combine the valley with the Tamang Heritage Trail for a cultural loop through hot springs and hilltop villages with views to Tibet.
